How to Listen to PDFs and Research Papers

What that table hides: Speechify's headline features are phone capture and ~5× playback, and neither does much for a paper. 5× is not a comprehension speed for a methods section, and once the file is open you are paying roughly $100/year more for a player with no chunking, no reading fonts, and no silent-reading mode to switch into. Two-Column Papers and Figures

- Paper shorthand expands. Fig. 3 is "Figure 3," Eq. 2 is "Equation 2," cf. is "compare," and e.g. is "for example."
- Citations and footnote markers are dropped. Superscript call-outs and references like [12] or [3, 14] are stripped, so the sentence keeps its grammar instead of collecting stray numbers.
- Unknown initialisms are spelled out. TGA becomes "T G A" while NASA stays NASA. A voice that invents a syllable for an initialism is worse than one that spells it.
This is the difference between a paper you can follow with your ears and one where every third sentence needs a rewind. It does not replace looking at a displayed equation or a figure - those still need your eyes, as above - but inline notation stops derailing the prose around it.
Papers in Another Language
